Blog / Happy Birthday, Albrecht Durer

Posted

Today is renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer’s birthday. Dürer (1471-1528) is generally considered the most notable artist of the Northern European Renaissance. While he is perhaps best known for his printmaking, indeed he breathed new live into classic techniques like woodcarving (see image), he was also a painter and engraver. During his life he inspired many contemporaries in his home country and across the continent. Dürer’s legacy and popularity live on to this day. His work is instantly recognizable with his now classic AD monogram.

Pictured: Dürer’s Rhinoceros (currently on view at the British Museum; courtesy Wikipedia Commons) is a woodcut that documented the arrival of an Indian Rhinoceros  to Lisbon and was based on a brief description and sketch by an unknown artist.

Some of Dürer’s works are part of the Nasher Museum of Art’s permanent collection. http://nasher.duke.edu/collections/
