Our very own Marshall N. Price, Nancy Hanks Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, went on a last-minute mission to Chicago over the weekend to see new work by artist Nina Chanel Abney. This exciting young artist has a solo show coming up at the Nasher Museum, in spring 2017! Marshall sent us photos from his trip (see below) to Monique Meloche Gallery, where Abney’s work is part of the group exhibition Look At Me Now! The artists give various perspectives on the history of portraiture through the construction of a new gaze. More from the gallery: “Throughout the exhibition, subtle hints of allegory give way to overt Pop-culture references. It is through this lens that Rashayla Marie Brown, Hassan Hajjaj, Rashid Johnson, Ebony G. Patterson, Amy Sherald, William Villalongo and Nina Chanel Abney produce, creating imagery that references, disarms and reframes the canon of portraiture.” The Nasher Museum also recently acquired a powerful new work by Ebony G. Patterson.
