GALLERY TALK – TOOLS, TECHNIQUES, AND GEOMETRY: MEDIEVAL SCULPTURE IN THE NASHER’S COLLECTION / Tuesday, January 27, 4 PM / Simon Verity is a British sculptor and master stonecarver who worked for nine years supervising the sculpture for the western portal, or Portal of Paradise, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. His works are also in the private collections of the Prince of Wales, Sir Elton John and Lord Rothschild. This is Simon’s second artist residency at Duke. In 2013 he conducted a workshop on stone carving techniques with students. He returns for a two-week residency, during which he will create a duplicate of a 13th-Century head of a virtue, from Notre Dame in Paris, now in the Nasher Museum’s collection. His gallery talk will focus on the head of the virtue, as well as other medieval architectural sculpture on view in the gallery.
