NASHER MUSEUM OF ART AT DUKE UNIVERSITY

From Gauguin to Muniz in Miami

By Wendy
An artist’s influences are always fascinating. When the Nasher Museum presents contemporary art, our curators often talk about it in an art historical context. Brazilian artist Vik Muniz makes that pretty easy for us sometimes, especially when he literally lists his connections with famous, deceased artists in the titles of his work.
Muniz, whose work is part of our permanent collection and will be on view this spring in Light Sensitive, popped up all over the place this week at Art Basel Miami Beach. We found several examples from his series that explores iconic works by blue chip artists, including Paul Gauguin, Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns.
The photograph above is a replica of Gauguin’s Alone, using dry, powdered pigment. It can be yours for $75,000.
