Talk: George W. Hart
Thu Sep 13, 2012 4:30pm
Talk: George W. Hart on "Mathematics inspiring Art." George W. Hart holds a B.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, both from MIT. Previously a research professor in the computer science department at Stony Brook University, he has recently helped to found the Museum of Mathematics and design its initial set of exhibits. Hart is a mathematician and sculptor, exploring innovative ways to use computer technology in the design and fabrication of artwork. His work deals with patterns and relationships derived from classical ideals of balance and symmetry; it has been exhibited around the world. Mathematical yet organic, his abstract forms invite the viewer to partake of the geometric aesthetic. He uses a variety of media, including paper, wood, plastic, metal, and assemblages of common household objects. Hart will direct a do-deck-ahedron workshop on September 14, in which participants will be guided through a tricky dodecahedral construction, observing cool mathematical facts on the way. In the end, each participant will hold a spiky ball made out of playing cards arranged in spirals, all holding together without glue, which can be taken home at the conclusion of the workshop. The talk is co-sponsored by Duke's Department of Mathematics and the Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies.
