THE EXPERIENCE OF SEEING

By Sarah Schroth, Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans Director

Welcome to our spring issue of Five Cubes, a quarterly e-magazine publication created especially for the Duke Community.

I hope you include your art museum in your plans this spring, whether you’re coming to campus for your reunion in April, for graduation in May, or just simply to see the campus in bloom. We are thrilled to present Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Blake Byrne, featuring 50 years of art from his Hollywood home. Blake Byrne, T ‘57, will lead a not-to-be missed panel discussion on “Collecting, Philanthropy and Ethics” on April 9 at 7 PM. with collector Mike Levine, T ’84, P’16, P’18, Peter Boris, executive vice president of Pace Gallery, NY, and Brian Boucher, senior writer for Artnet News.

While here, you can also see the exciting show, Area 919: Artists in the Triangle, our first-ever survey of work by artists who live next door—on view until April 12. Our vast collection of prints comes to light this spring with the eye-popping exhibition, Colour Correction: British and American Screenprints, 1967-75, opening on April 2. This show illustrates what many art historians consider the “golden age” of screenprinting.

Meanwhile, have fun perusing Five Cubes, five new stories that take you into the five pavilions of the Nasher Museum. I hope you enjoy reading about art world alumni, current Duke students who have a meaningful relationship with the museum and its staff, and our new program for visitors with Alzheimer’s. And as always, thank you, our success depends on you!

Don’t forget to include the Nasher Museum in your Reunion Weekend plans next month! Admission is always free when you bring your Duke Alumni Association membership card.

Sincerely,

Sarah Schroth
