Tales of Travel

Activity Instructions

Display Town Bridge, by Brodsky and Utkin. Ask open-ended questions about the setting, the man’s trip from his current vantage point to the town, and his point of view:

  • How will the man get to town?
  • How long do you think it will take him to get there?
  • What do you think the man is thinking?
  • Why do you think the town is on the bridge?
  • What is the weather like? The season?
  • What is the time of day?

Prompt students to support their inferences with facts.

As an extension or follow-up activity, have students write or draw stories of travel inspired by another artwork that shows people moving, such as The Wolf in Tempelhof or Hunting in the Alps. How can they incorporate details from the original artwork in their own stories?
