Guided tour in Mandarin: Dis/orient: Contemporary Art of the Asian Diaspora
[SIMPLIFIED CHINESE] [

[ENGLISH]
Join us for a tour of Dis/orient: Contemporary Art of the Asian Diaspora led in Mandarin.
Dis/orient dismantles stereotypes of “the orient” though the work of eight contemporary artists belonging to the Asian diaspora. From Stephanie Shih’s ceramic sculptures inspired by familiar grocery items to Asuka Anastacia Ogawa’s dreamlike paintings shaped by her Japanese and Brazilian heritage, these works remind us that the Asian diaspora is a wide-ranging collection of experiences marked by resilience, creativity, and continual transformation.
The tour will be led by artist and activist huiyin zhou 徽音 (they/ta/她). Born and raised in
the industrial hub of Dongguan, China, huiyin is a writer, multimedia artist and cultural worker. A diasporic bird constantly up- and re-rooting themselves, they are currently based in Durham, NC. Their work explores themes related to queer feminism, intimacy, memory, diaspora, and community building. huiyin co-founded and co-directs Chinese Artists and Organizers (CAO) Collective离离草, a mycelial art space for relational healing. They are the co-curator at NorthStar Church of the Arts and a resident artist at Queen Street Magic Boat.
Three tours will be held at 5:30pm, 6:30pm, and 7:30pm. Tours have a limited capacity of 20 participants per time slot and spots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must register for a tour time upon arrival.
This program is co-organized with the Asian/Pacific Studies Institute and the Chinese Language Program in the Department of Asian & Middles Eastern Studies At Duke
University.
Special thank you to huiyin zhou for their translation of this text.
