In honor of Juneteenth, join us for a special screening of independent film, Daughters of the Dust (1991), written and directed by Julie Dash. Set in 1902 on the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina, the film follows three generations of Gullah women as they navigate the tension between preserving their heritage and adapting to the changing world around them. They must confront the emotional and cultural pull of their ancestral Yoruba traditions. While the film doesn’t engage with Juneteenth directly as a historical event, it explores themes of identity, family, migration, and the complexities of cultural survival in the afterlife of chattel slavery.
