“The dance community and being able to physically dance with others in the same space are definitely segments of my life that I have been craving more of recently. Usually, when I choreograph a dance I often use improvisation as a tool and start to move in reference to a motif or a prompt. Carrie Mae Weems’s work represents a community that I am a part of and, as a result, I started to construct my choreography from a small improvisation and continued to build upon it with the idea of playing with levels and tempos. This work serves as a reminder that there is hope and, with patience, we will all be dancing together again.” — Kahlila Brown, dance artist based in Durham
