Join multimedia artist Julia Gartrell to explore the process of repair and transformation through the Radical Repair Workshop, housed in a vintage camper trailer. Visitors are invited to donate broken items for the artist to repair, and learn how to mend their own objects. The broken objects may be restored to their fully-functioning state or they may become non-functioning permanent art objects. Visitors will be able to step inside the camper to explore the gallery and studio and explore repair techniques through demonstrations and samples. The Radical Repair Workshop will teach concrete skills, such as sewing and darning, but also explore abstract notions of repair.

How many times have you driven by a broken chair on the curb and thought….. could I fix that? Readily available for free, broken chairs are always a tempting mend! Come to this workshop to work collaboratively on provided broken chairs. There will be several stations with different approaches to mending a chair, from weaving to paint to glue and beyond.  Come help out and get inspired to pick up the next bottomless chair you see.

The Radical Repair Workshop, parked in the Nasher Sculpture Garden, is part of the exhibition Reckoning and Resilience: North Carolina Art Now.

We strongly encourage all individuals to be fully vaccinated before visiting the Nasher. The museum will adhere to all university, local and state regulations, which are subject to change on short notice depending on public health conditions. Specific health and safety information will be updated on this page.
