5:30 PM Music in the Galleries: Quartet from Duke Symphony Orchestra
6:00 PM Gallery Talk
6:45 PM Reception

Join Duke student curators for a talk on their exhibition, Silvia Heyden: Weaving Notes & Nature, in the Nasher’s Incubator Gallery. The exhibition brings Heyden’s work back to Duke, 54 years after her first solo exhibition at the Duke University Museum of Art. Featuring several of the same works shown in that early exhibition, the presentation at the Nasher highlights her experimental pieces from the 1960s and 70s, traces the evolution of her bold techniques, and celebrates the lasting influence of the Durham community on her art.

In celebration of the music that inspired Heyden, a quartet from Duke Symphony Orchestra will perform her favorite compositions, as well as pieces inspired by the texture and harmony found in her art. Student musicians include Noelle Y. Barr, violin; Frances Hayward, violin; Hailey Kasney, viola; and John Critelli, cello.

Silvia Heyden: Weaving Notes & Nature was created through the Curatorial Practicum: Development and Design course, taught by Dr. Julia McHugh, Trent A. Carmichael Director of Academic Initiatives and Curator of Art of the Americas at the Nasher Museum of Art. Student curators include Isatou Fall (UNC-Greensboro ’27), Duke undergraduates Cristina Mitchell T’25, Nina Venter T’26, Aviv Yochai T’25, and Lydia Yi, PhD student in Art History. Research assistance was provided by Klein Voorhees.

The project is supported by Ruth A.B. ’81, P’11 and John A.B. ’81, P’11 Caccavale, and made possible through collaboration with Françoise and Daniel Heyden, the Triangle Weavers Guild, and textile preservation specialist Stacey Kirby.
