Storytelling in the Gallery: Courtside

Enjoy a storytelling hour with Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, inspired by images in the exhibition Courtside: Photographs by Bill Bamberger, within The Collection Galleries. Featured guests John Biewen, Jaki Shelton Green, and Daniel Wallace will use audio, poetry, and prose to tell stories about the sport of basketball and its connection to individuals and communities around the world.

John Biewen’s radio work has taken him to 40 American states and to Europe, Japan, and India. He has produced stories for This American Life, Studio 360, American RadioWork, the State of the Re:Union and the BBC World Service. He is audio program director at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies where he teaches audio classes and produces the podcast Scene on the Radio.

Jaki Shelton Green is a writer and poet, a North Carolina native whose publications include Dead on Arrival, Masks, Conjure Blues, singing a tree into dance, breath of the song, Blue Opal (a play) and Feeding the Light. In 2009 she served as the North Carolina Piedmont Laureate and in 2014 she was inducted into the state’s Literary Hall of Fame. She teaches at Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies.

Daniel Wallace is the author of five novels. His first, Big Fish, was made into a motion picture of the same name by Tim Burton in 2003, and a musical version on Broadway in 2013. He is a contributing editor to Garden & Gun magazine and is the J. Ross MacDonald Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he teaches and directs the Creative Writing Program.
