In Memoriam: Dr. J. Caldwell, 1977-2025
Longtime Nasher Museum colleague and friend, Dr. J. Caldwell, passed away on June 18, 2025. Born on July 29, 1977, in Greenville, SC, J was the beloved son of Susan Caldwell and the late Robert Caldwell.
A brilliant mind with a passion for discovery, J graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Biological Sciences. They furthered their education at the University of Iowa and Duke University, earning their Master’s, Ph.D. and Postdoctoral in Neurobiology and Behavior. Their intellect and dedication led them to a fulfilling career at the Nasher Museum, where they served as the museum’s web designer, videographer and photographer for over 15 years.
“J was a kind-hearted colleague who had a real love for the Nasher, its people, programs, exhibitions and the artists who they met over the years. They were a dedicated photographer with a curious mind, a deep love of music, and a keen sense of humor. They will be greatly missed.” – Trevor Schoonmaker, Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans Director.
J is survived by their loving mother, Susan Caldwell; their sister, Meredith Caldwell Arnest; nephews, Charlie and Carter Arnes; and their beloved feline companions, Piper, Wednesday and Lott.
A private family service will be held at a later date to celebrate J’s life.
