This video documents the installation of a 25-foot sculpture by Los Angeles-based artist Mark Bradford at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Bradford created the work, “A Private Stranger Thinking about His Needs,” in 2016 from paper and other found materials. It is on view as part of “Solidary & Solitary: The Joyner/Giuffrida Collection,” February 22 through July 15, 2018. Special thanks to Molly Boarati, Jessica Chen, Allan Dippy, Melissa Gwynn, Brad Johnson, Patrick Krivacka, Bryce Lankard, Lee Nisbet, Marshall N. Price, Kelly Woolbright, Aaron Zalonis. Video edited by J Caldwell with footage by J Caldwell, Rachel Goodwin and Wendy Hower. The installation took several hours of careful, deliberate and orchestrated moves involving one scissor lift and a crew of preparators, conservators, registrars and curators from the Nasher Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Solidary & Solitary opened at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans in September 2017. From the Nasher Museum, the exhibition will travel to the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame; the David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The exhibition is co-curated by Christopher Bedford, Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director of the Baltimore Museum of Art, and Katy Siegel, senior programming and research curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art and Thaw Chair in Modern American Art at Stony Brook University. Solidary & Solitary: The Joyner/Giuffrida Collection is presented by The Helis Foundation and organized by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and The Baltimore Museum of Art.
