Installation of Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making, 1948 – 1960

For the past week, visitors have noticed some behind-the-scenes activity in our Great Hall. Crates arrived and installation began for the new exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making, 1948 – 1960, opening August 25, 2022.

Thirteen institutions, including the Lichtenstein Foundation and Lichtenstein Estate, have loaned paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints. Most will be on public view for the first time.

This is the first major museum exhibition to investigate the early work of one of the most celebrated American artists of the 20th century. The exhibition tells the overlooked story of Lichtenstein’s early career and establishes a deeper understanding of postwar American art.
