DURHAM, NC – The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University today announced the establishment of the Susan and Barkley L. Hendricks Artist Lecture, made possible through a transformative gift from longtime museum supporter Susan Hendricks. This endowment ensures the museum’s signature artist lecture series will continue in perpetuity, celebrating and amplifying the voices of leading contemporary artists.

Since its founding in 2005, the Nasher has pursued a mission not only to present groundbreaking contemporary art, but to connect Duke and Durham with the wider world of art and ideas. The new Susan and Barkley L. Hendricks Artist Lecture deepens that commitment, honoring artists whose work transcends boundaries, shapes cultural conversations, and creates space for under-recognized talents. A key moment came in 2008, when the Nasher presented Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool, a landmark retrospective that toured nationally, elevating both Hendricks’s career and the museum’s profile in global dialogue. That same year, Hendricks also served as one of the museum’s early lecturers, engaging audiences with his insights on art, portraiture, and representation.

“Barkley made an indelible mark on the Nasher through his powerful work, thought-provoking talks, and many conversations,” said Trevor Schoonmaker, Director of the Nasher Museum. “He and Susan became true members of our community, helping the Nasher deepen its connection to Durham. Barkley opened doors for new generations of artists and reinforced the Nasher’s vision that when artists are lifted up and connected to the world, entire communities are enriched. We are deeply grateful to Susan for making this lecture series possible – one that honors Barkley’s lasting impact and continues that spirit of connection.”

The lecture series has become one of the Nasher’s most anticipated annual public programs, featuring an illustrious roster of visiting artists who have shaped global contemporary art and culture. Past speakers have included Amy Sherald, Kerry James Marshall, Carrie Mae Weems, John Akomfrah, Wangechi Mutu, Mel Chin, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Dario Robleto, william cordova, Cannupa Hanska Luger, and the Guerrilla Girls.

Through the Susan and Barkley L. Hendricks Artist Lecture, the Nasher Museum will continue to provide a vital platform for artists to share their creative practices, challenge conventions, and spark conversation within Duke and Durham.

“Barkley had a special relationship with the Nasher and believed deeply in the power of art,” said Susan Hendricks. “He wanted people to see themselves reflected in art and to feel the connection and dignity that comes from that recognition. For artists to truly create in this world, they must be seen and respected and honored. This lecture series keeps that spirit alive by creating space for artists who, like Barkley, change how we see the world and one another.”
