Summer Hours

History We Can Touch

"Multi-sensory experiences create more focused and memorable museum experiences. Touching objects are a meaningful thing to incorporate into classrooms and gallery tours." —Abigail Hartemink, Duke Class of 2025, summer intern at the Nasher.

Rising Duke junior Abigail Hartemink followed several threads from her childhood to a summer internship at the Nasher Museum: a love of art, a passion for sewing and textile work, a fascination with ancient cultures and an aptitude for art history.

Black President

20th Anniversary
of Black President

"Two decades hindsight, Black President can be regarded as a landmark, convening a global community of artists of color, whose materials and ideas redefined the purpose and meaning of 'fine' and 'contemporary' art." —Piotr Orlov in Dada Strain

Before he came to Duke in 2006, Nasher Museum Director Trevor Schoonmaker made a name for himself in the New York art world with his exhibition Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in 2003. Trevor's longtime friend and collaborator, music writer Piotr Orlov, looks back on the experience of co-curating the music program for the exhibition in his essay for Dada Strain. Piotr also contributed to the Fela-inspired club night Jump N Funk, which Trevor co-founded with DJ Rich Medina in 2001, leading up to the exhibition.

Over the years, the Nasher Museum has collected work by many of the artists included in Black President: Radcliffe Bailey, Sanford Biggers, Barkley L. Hendricks, Alfredo Jaar, Wangechi Mutu, Odili Donald Odita, Kara Walker, Ouattara Watts and Fred Wilson. Read the essay.
