Join artists Derrick Beasley and Marcella Zigbuo Camara for a special edition of their ongoing community series, Open Stu, this time drawing inspiration from the exhibition Lyle Ashton Harris: Our first and last love. Derrick and Marcella also invite our creative community into the process of documenting and storytelling. At an archive station, visitors can scan prints and also print digital images of family photos and photos of their own communities.

Visitors are invited to peruse a Maroon Archive, a collection of books, texts and Black ephemera exploring diasporic realities from fugitivity to futurism, curated by Marcella Zigbuo Camara. The Maroon Archive will include books and exhibition catalogues from Marcella, Derrick and the Nasher Museum’s collections.
Open Stu was inspired by Harlem Renaissance-era pop-up events of Carl Van Vechten, the Studio portrait practice of Addison N. Scurlock of Washington, D.C., as well as the work of Kamoinge Collective in Brooklyn. Previous Open Stu events have taken place at Derrick’s studio, the Black Wall Street forum, Shadowbox Studio. During the pandemic, he hosted a Zoom version called “Open Stüp.”
