In Conversation: Kennedi Carter + Sarah Sudhoff

Join us for an evening in conversation with Kennedi Carter and Sarah Sudhoff, two of the artists featured in our exhibition By dawn’s early light. We’ll discuss how their works—Shahqeel (2020) and New Spelling (2023)—speak to issues of historical and contemporary erasures of futures that could have been (and could still be) as well as their thematic relationships to colonialism and gun violence. Curator Xuxa Rodríguez will lead the discussion and guests are welcome to ask their own questions during the response session. Stay after the talk to enjoy light refreshments with the artists.

Artist bios:

Kennedi Carter is a digital media-based artist, born in Charlottesville, Virginia and raised in Durham, North Carolina. Through archiving & photography, she aims to highlight the aesthetics & sociopolitical aspects of Black life as well as the overlooked beauties of the Black experience: skin, texture, trauma, pleasure, love and community. Her work has been featured in the RISD Museum in Rhode Island, Saatchi Gallery in London, the Harwood Museum of Art in New Mexico, British Vogue Magazine, and Atmos Magazine.

Sarah Sudhoff is a Cuban-American artist born in Honolulu, Hawaii and based in Houston, Texas. She uses data, performances, photography, prints, sound, and video to unpack the gun violence epidemic’s ongoing socio-cultural impacts, the psychological landscapes of caregiving and motherhood, sexuality and gender-based violence, and heritage and transgenerational memory. Her work has been exhibited at Blaffer Art Museum in Texas, Donggang Photo Museum in South Korea, Pioneer Works in New York, Luckman Gallery in California, and the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans.
